U.S. National Team Falls To Russia, 3-1

STANFORD, Calif. – The United States Women’s National Team dropped a 22-25, 25-13, 25-23, 25-18 decision to Russia, Friday, to wrap up pool play at the Montreux Volley Masters Tournament in Switzerland.

Team USA, which posted a 2-1 record and a second-place finish in Pool A, will face Pool B’s Cuba (3-0) in the semifinal round on Saturday, June 12 at 9 p.m. local time (Noon PT).

Barboza, a starter contributed six points for the U.S. with five kills and a block in just the first two sets. Former Cardinal standouts Ogonna Nnamani and Kristin Richards each added five points off the bench. Russia out-blocked the U.S. 12-9 and held a sizeable 64-51 advantage in kills. The U.S. managed a slim 4-3 edge in aces, but had 18 total errors to Russia’s 15.

Russia won Pool A with a 3-0 record and will face Pool B’s China in the opposite semifinal match. Japan finished Pool A in third place, while Germany finished fourth. Cuba won Pool B with a 3-0 record, while China advances to the semifinals with a 2-1 record in the group. Netherlands finished 1-2 and Poland was 0-3.
