U.S. Rallies For 1-1 Tie With England In World Cup Opener

June 12, 2010

UCLA alum and U.S. team captain Carlos Bocanegra (1997-99) led the U.S. to a solid 1-1 tie against England in both teams' World Cup opener on Saturday in Rustenburg, South Africa. The U.S. rallied from a 1-0 deficit after just four minutes, tying the game in the 40th minute on a goal by Clint Dempsey.

Bocanegra, who is playing in his second World Cup, started and played all 90 minutes. Fellow Bruin alumni Jonathan Bornstein (2004-05) and Benny Feilhaber (2003-04) did not play.

Both teams earn one point in Group C play. The other first week pairing will take place Sunday with a game against Algeria and Slovenia. The U.S. will next face Slovenia on Friday, June 18 at 7 am PT in a game that will be televised on ESPN.
