UCLA Gymnast Vanessa Zamarripa Qualifies To 2010 Visa Championships
June 13, 2010
UCLA junior Vanessa Zamarripa qualified to the 2010 Visa Championships, USA Gymnastics' national championships, after a strong showing at the National Elite qualifier this weekend in Deerfield Beach, FL.
Needing to score 54.0 to qualify to the Visa Championships or 53.0 to qualify to the Visa Championships qualifying meet (CoverGirl Classic), Zamarripa scored 54.55 to win Session 3 on Saturday and book her ticket to her first USA Nationals. She also won the compulsory competition on Sunday morning with a score of 36.8 (35.0 is required). Zamarripa will likely compete at the CoverGirl Classic in Chicago on July 24 as a tuneup to the Visa Championships, which will take place in Hartford, CT on Aug. 12 and 14. 'Competing elite was something that Vanessa felt she had some unfinished business with,' said UCLA head coach Valorie Kondos Field. 'We've always said that she is a diamond in the rough, and these last two years she has concentrated on her discipline and focus in the gym so that she is doing quality over quantity. She's obviously got the talent, but because she has been so focused, she's been able to maintain a healthy body. We wanted to make sure she was able to go out and compete in the elite realm with the same enthusiasm as she has competed in college, and she was definitely able to do that.' Zamarripa is coming off an outstanding 2010 season in which she led UCLA to a postseason sweep, culminating in the team's sixth NCAA title. She herself won the NCAA vault championship, four All-America honors, the Pac-10 all-around and vault titles, and Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year acclaim.
