The U.S. National Team Captures Silver At Montreaux Tournament

STANFORD, Calif. - The U.S. Women's National Team dropped the gold-medal match to China 23-25, 29-27, 25-22, 25-20, Sunday, in the Montreux Volley Masters Tournament in Switzerland.

The U.S., which was playing in the event for the first time since 2005, settled for the silver medal. Earlier in the day, Cuba swept Russia 25-13, 25-18, 27-25 to capture the bronze medal.

Former Cardinal Cynthia Barboza led the U.S. with 18 kills, one block and one ace for 20 points. Stanford standout Ogonna Nnamani added 10 kills, three blocks and an ace for 14 points. China held an 80-70 advantage in kills and 4-2 margin in aces. Team USA tallied eight blocks to China's six. The U.S. took advantage from 14 Chinese errors to their own 12 for the match.

The U.S. finished second in Pool A with a 2-1 record and defeated Pool B winner Cuba in the semi-finals to advance to the gold-medal match. China, which finished second in Pool B behind Cuba, defeated Pool A winner Russia in the semi-finals to advance to the title match.

Following the Montreux Volley Masters Tournament, the U.S. Women's National Team will travel to Tijuana, Mexico, to compete in the Ninth Pan American Cup scheduled for June 18-26. In July, the team will have two Red vs. Blue exhibition matches. The first exhibition is scheduled for Irvine Valley College (5500 Irvine Center Dr, Irvine, Calif.) on July 17 at 7 p.m. PT. The second exhibition is scheduled for St. Margaret's Episcopal School (31641 LaNovia Avenue, San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) on July 24 at 7 p.m. PT. Tickets are $5 at the door.
