2010 Preseason Publications Honors

BERKELEY - With all the major 2010 preseason publications now on newsstands and much of the preseason recognition having been bestowed upon college football players, here's an up-to-date summary of the key preseason honors given to Cal football players.
Senior linebacker Mike Mohamed, junior punter Bryan Anger and senior quarterback Kevin Riley are the team's three players recognized on preseason All-American teams, while several other players have earned Pac-10 honors.
Mohamed has garnered the most national attention as he has been selected to the Playboy Preseason All-America team, while also earning a second-team preseason All-American honor from The Kickoff, third-team recognition by NationalChamps.net and Phil Steele, and an honorable mention selection from Consensus Draft Services. In addition, he is on watch lists for The Lott Trophy and Rotary Lombardi Award, and is a preseason favorite for the College Football Performance Awards Linebacker Trophy.
Anger was selected a third-team preseason All-American by Phil Steele and was honorable mention according to NationalChamps.net. He is also a preseason favorite for the CFPA Punter Trophy.
Riley was an honorable selection of Consensus Draft Services.
Anger added unanimous first-team preseason All-Pac-10 selections from Athlon, Lindy's, Phil Steele and Sporting News, while Mohamed garnered the same honor from each of the first three.
Others who have earned preseason first-team preseason All-Pac-10 honors prior to the 2010 campaign by both Lindy's and Sporting News include junior defensive back Sean Cattouse and junior tight end Anthony Miller. Miller also added second-team recognition from Phil Steele and third-team by Athlon, while Cattouse was a third-team pick of both.
Sophomore tailback Shane Vereen, senior defensive lineman Cameron Jordan and junior offensive linemen Mitchell Schwartz were all second-team All-Pac-10 selections according to Athlon, Lindy's and Phil Steele.
Vereen was also called a 'Heisman possibility' by Phil Steele and is a favorite for the CFPA Running Back Trophy.
Lindy's named Jordan as the Pac-10's No. 8 NFL talent and called Cal's 'next big thing' by Sporting News.
Senior punt returner Jeremy Ross picked up second-team All-Pac-10 honors from Phil Steele and third team recognition by Athlon, while sophomore offensive lineman Matt Summers-Gavin was a second-team pick of Phil Steele. Ross is also a favorite for the CFPA Punt Returner Trophy.
Junior wide receiver Marvin Jones was a third-team preseason All-Pac-10 selection by both Athlon and Phil Steele, while senior defensive lineman Derrick Hill and junior linebacker Mychal Kendricks picked up third-team nods from Phil Steele.Center Chris Guarnero was a Phil Steele preseason fourth-team All-Pac-10 pick.
The Bears were picked to finish as high as third in the Pac-10 according to Phil Steele, while Athlon and Lindy's have Cal seventh and Sporting News eighth.Cal opens its 2010 season vs. UC Davis on Saturday, Sept. 4. The upcoming campaign also includes visits from Arizona State, Colorado, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA and Washington during a seven-game home schedule.
