Ben An Begins U.S. Open Thursday

June 16, 2010

PEBBLE BEACH - Byeong-Hun 'Ben' An, who has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Cal men's golf team in 2010-11, will begin play at the 2010 U.S. Open Championship on Thursday at the Pebble Beach Golf Links.

An, who qualified for the event after becoming the youngest-ever U.S. Amateur champ last August at 17 years of age, will tee off from the first hole at 8:17 a.m., along with Stewart Cink and Lucas Glover.

'The course is really spectacular ... but it's really, really hard,' An told the USGA on Tuesday. 'It's not a long course, so that's not much of an issue, but the greens are really firm and hard, and you have to know where you want to hit it off the tee because you can get in trouble pretty quickly.'

The 72-hole event runs thru Sunday, June 20.
