Akinradewo Leads U.S. To 2-0 Start At Pan Am Cup

STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford alum Foluke Akinradewo has led the United States National Team to a 2-0 start at the IX Pan America Cup in Tijuana, Mexico. The U.S. first swept Peru, 27-25, 25-22, 25-17, on Friday before downing Puerto Rico, 25-13, 25-17, 25-14, on Saturday.

The U.S., grouped in Pool B, continues action on Sunday and Monday, June 20 and June 21, with matches against Trinidad & Tobago and Costa Rica, respectively. Both matches are slated for 6 p.m. PT in Rosarita, Mexico.

Against Peru, Akinradewo recorded seven kills on 10 attacks with no errors, as well as two blocks and an ace. Fellow Cardinal alum Ogonna Nnamani added a kill for the U.S., joining Cynthia Barboza as subs off the bench in the first two sets. Team USA out-blocked Peru 11-4 for the match, while holding a 3-1 advantage in aces and 44-37 margin in kills.

Versus Puerto Rico, Akinradewo tallied 10 kills on 14 attacks with no errors, while adding two blocks and an ace for the U.S. Cynthia Barboza was a sub in the second set. Team USA out-blocked Puerto Rico 13-3 for the match and held a 3-1 advantage in aces. The U.S. also had a 41-33 advantage in kills. The Americans had just five hitting errors, while Puerto Rico had 23 hitting errors to go with six service errors for 29 total errors.

The Americans conclude pool play against tournament host Mexico on June 22 at 7 p.m. PT in Tijuana. The Pan American Cup is a qualifying event into the 2011FIVB World Grand Prix.
