Barboza Leads U.S. To 3-0 Start At Pan Am Cup

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford alum Cynthia Barboza leads the United States Women’s National Team to a quick sweep of Trinidad & Tobago, 25-17, 25-9, 25-11, Sunday, at the IX Women’s Pan American Cup being held jointly in the neighboring Mexico towns of Tijuana and Rosarita.

Team USA improves to 3-0 during the Pan American Cup Pool B competition, while Trinidad & Tobago team falls to 2-1. The U.S., the only undefeated team left in Pool B, continues action on Monday against Costa Rica (0-2) at 6 p.m. in Rosarita before concluding pool play on June 22 against host Mexico at 7 p.m. in Tijuana.

The U.S. used a 7-1 scoring run to break free from a 6-5 advantage in the opening set to win 25-17. Team USA produced an 11-2 scoring spurt in the second set to take an 18-6 margin en route to a 25-9 win. The Americans claimed a 12-3 lead in the third set on an 11-1 scoring run and never allowed Trinidad back into the set with a 25-11 victory.

Barboza tallied nine points for the U.S., registering nine kills on 16 errorless swings for a .563 hitting percentqage. Another former Cardinal standout, Foluke Akinradewo, had four kills for a .667 hitting efficiency and a block for five points in the first set only. Barboza added five digs and a team-high nine excellent service receptions on 13 attempts. Team USA had 18 excellent service receptions on 29 attempts.

As a team, the U.S. converted 35 of 67 attacks into kills for a 52.2 kill percent and .463 hitting efficiency. The U.S. out-blocked Trinidad & Tobago 9-2, while both teams had two aces. Team USA scored 35 points on kills, while limiting Trinidad & Tobago to 24 kills on 77 attacks as part of a 31.2 kill percent.

The Pan American Cup is a qualifying event into the 2011 FIVB World Grand Prix. The top three teams from NORCECA during the Pan American Cup earn berths into the 2011 FIVB World Grand Prix, while the top side from South America also earns a berth.
