Four Trojans Named To USTA Summer Collegiate Team

June 21, 2010

Four members of the USC tennis teams are all set for elite summer action after being named among a group of 25 members of the 2010 USTA Summer Collegiate Team. All-Americans Steve Johnson and Maria Sanchez were both on the team last year, and now are joined by teammates Daniel Nguyen and Danielle Lao.

The 2010 USTA Summer Collegiate Team, administered by the USTA and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), is a training program for the top American collegiate tennis players. The program, which began in 1996, is designed to provide college players with valuable exposure to the USTA Pro Circuit in a team-oriented environment during the summer. The top six American players from the season-ending ITA national singles rankings are eligible for automatic selections. The remaining players on each team were selected by USTA Player Development staff in conjunction with USTA National Coaches, and current collegiate coaches.

For Johnson and Sanchez, this is their second selection to the summer team. Both were named All-Americans this season after competition at the NCAA Championships. The ITA National Indoor Champion this season, Johnson finished the year ranked No. 9 in the nation for men's singles, while ITA Regional Champion Sanchez ranks No. 5 in the nation on the women's side. Danielle Lao finished her freshman season at USC ranked No. 43 in the nation, while Daniel Nguyen followed up his work in helping lead the USC men to the 2010 NCAA Team Championship with a final singles ranking of No. 63.

This season, Johnson and Sanchez both were named to the 2010 All-Pac-10 First Team. Nguyen was named to the All-Pac-10 Second Team, and Lao earned All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention.
