Three Bears Close Senior National Team-Futures Team Exhibition Series
June 23, 2010
ASHLAND, Ohio - It was the battle of the Bears - part II with current Golden Bears junior utility Valerie Arioto and sophomore outfielder Jamia Reid of the U.S. Futures national team playing against former California letterwinner Vicky Galindo and her U.S. senior national team in a doubleheader on June 17. The Futures team battled to a 0-0 tie with the senior squad in the first game with the senior team taking a 5-0 decision in the second game of the doubleheader.
'The second day was played on an actual softball field, rather than a baseball field and there were still many fans,' Reid said. 'My overall experience was unbelievable. It felt like a dream.'
The two teams had faced each other the day before in a doubleheader, of which the senior team won both games.
'Monica is very good,' Arioto said of former Tennessee star Monica Abbott, who pitched in the first game on June 17. 'It is always difficult to face her and any of the other pitchers on the national team.'
In game one of the day, Galindo started at second and had the first hit of the day when she singled to right in the first. Jamia Reid started in right and was placed on second in accordance with the international tie-breaker rule in the sixth. Arioto, who played first for the Futures, had a sacrifice fly to right in the sixth to advance Reid to third.
The second stanza saw Galindo pinch run in the sixth and come around to score when Chelsea Bramlett doubled to left. Reid, who played center, singled to short in the fourth but was caught stealing.
'After a few practices and the games, it was like we had been playing together for years!' Arioto said.
The Futures squad will take a break until it heads to Oklahoma City for the KFC World Cup of Softball from July 22-26. The USA Softball National Team will battle for its ninth World Championships this week in Caracas, Venezuela.
