Widegren Leads Europe with Early Victory in Palmer Cup.
June 24, 2010
UCLA freshman Pontus Widegren, representing his native Sweden, helped lead Europe to an early victory in the morning four-ball matches at the Palmer Cup at Royal Portrush Golf Club. The Americans, however, stormed back with four foursomes victories in the afternoon to take a 6-2 lead.
In the four-ball matches, the two sides split four matches. Widegren and countryman Henrik Norlander beat Scott Langley and Corey Nagy of the U.S., 4 and 3. The Swedes won the 3rd, 5th, 12th and 13th holes with birdies and added eagles on the 9th and 10th holes before clinching it on the 15th green. The other European winners were Rhys Enoch and Andrea Pavan, who won 3 and 2 over John Chin and Daniel Miernicki.
In the afternoon foursomes competitions, the U.S. swept all four matches. Widegren and teammate James Byrne lost 2-up to Langley and Nagy.
