Thurmond Places Fourth At USA Championships
June 27, 2010
DES MOINES, Iowa - UW legend Aretha Thurmond was one of three Husky alums in action today as the U.S. Track & Field Championships drew to a close at Drake Stadium. The three-time Olympian placed fourth in the women's discus final, proving she still remains among the nation's elite 12 years after her Husky career closed.
Thurmond, a four-time U.S. Champion in the discus, had a toss of 194-feet, 4-inches on her second attempt to make the finals and earn three more attempts. On her final throw, she moved the tape out to 195-5, good for fourth-place and just a foot out of third. This season is considered an 'off year' for international track stars as there is no Olympic or World Championship berths on the line at USAs.
On the track, 2007 grad Ryan Brown was back in another 800-meter final, but the Renton native ran out of steam on the final lap and came in eighth. Brown had just three races under his belt during this outdoor season coming into Des Moines, and then was faced with two qualifying rounds prior to the final. Still, Brown raced well just to make the final and can look forward to a number of European meets this summer to get into top shape.
Lastly, 2008 grad and Seattle-native Norris Frederick competed in the long jump but had a tough day as he fouled two of his three attempts, and couldn't get his footing on his only legal mark either, finishing 18th overall.
