2010 SEASON IN REVIEW

Despite falling to South Carolina, 2-1, in the bottom of the 11th inning on a walk-off single at the NCAA College World Series, the UCLA baseball team captured its first-ever victories (3) in Omaha, Neb., the first being an 11-3 win over No. 3 Florida. With 51 wins on the season, the Bruins set a school record for most wins in a single-season.

ARIZONA, ARIZONA STATE, CALIFORNIA, OREGON, OREGON STATE, STANFORD, UCLA and WASHINGTON STATE all earned NCAA postseason bids. The eight Pac-10 teams are the most in the Conference's history and the 80 percent marks the best percentage (eight of 10 teams) in NCAA Division I history. the Pac-10 now has 26 NCAA championships, the most of any Conference, distancing the Big 12 by 16 championships. With UCLA and Arizona State advancing to the CWS, the Pac-10 has now produced a CWS participant each year since 1997.

With a 12-4 victory over then-No. 3 Arizona State on Sunday, May 16, Arizona manager Andy Lopez became the sixth manager this season and the 46th all-time to win 1,000 games in their careers.

Arizona State's Zack MacPhee was awarded Pac-10 Player of the Year honors, while teammate Seth Blair was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year. ASU's first-year skipper Tim Esmay earned Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Sun Devils to the Pac-10 Championship and the NCAA College World Series. Stanford third baseman Kenny Diekroeger was selected as the league's Freshman of the Year, while California's Brain Guinn was named Defensive Player of the Year.

PAC-10 TEAM NOTES

ARIZONA (34-24, 12-15): The Wildcats appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in the last eight seasons... During the regular season, Arizona strung together a 15-game winning streak, the seventh-longest in the nation in 2010... With a 12-4 win on Sunday, May 16, over No. 3 Arizona State, head coach Andy Lopez became the sixth manager this season and the 46th all-time coach to win 1,000 games in their careers... Arizona became just the seventh program in history to win 2,500 games all-time...FR RHP Kurt Heyer had quite the rookie campagin, throwing the first complete game by a Wildcat since Preston Guilmet did so on April 25, 2008 against Oregon State and recording a career-high 14 strikeouts in a 5-3 win over Washington State... The 14 k's were the second-highest single game tally by an Arizona freshman in school history.

ARIZONA STATE (52-8, 20-7): First year skipper of the Sun Devils, Tim Esmay led his squad to the Pac-10 Championship and to the NCAA College World Series, earning Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors along the way... SO 2B Zach MacPhee, a 2010 Golden Spikes Award semifinalist, earned Pac-10 Player of the Year honors after leading the league in three offensive categories, including on-base percentage (.491), runs scored (66) and triples (14). He ranked second in slugging percentage (.679), third in batting average (.394), RBI (64) and total bases (150), and seventh in hits (87)... With Brett Wallace earning Conference Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008, and Jason Kipnis winning last season, it marked the first time in Pac-10 history that an institution has produced four-straight winners... ASU's 24-game winning streak to start the season was a program record and was the second-longest streak in school history... Esmay set a new ASU standard for wins to start a career with 24, besting Jim Brock who held the previous record at 12-0.

CALIFORNIA (29-25, 13-14): The Golden Bears made their 11th NCAA Tournament and third trip under skipper Dave Esquer... California swept Arizona (4/1-4/3), marking its first sweep of a Pac-10 foe since 2007 when it swept USC... A week later, the Bears swept USC in LA, marking the first sweep in LA since the Pac-10 went to a three-game format in 1972... JR 2B Brain Guinn became the first Cal player to earn Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year honors after registering a .997 fielding percentage, while committing just six errors... JR 1B Mark Canha led the Conference with 69 RBI... The Bear hitters finished the season with a .318 team batting average, the school's highest average since the 1991 squad hit .321 in 1991... Cal pitchers notched seven shutouts, the most since 1978.

OREGON (40-24, 13-14): Only two years after reinstating the baseball program, Oregon made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1964... The Ducks recorded their first sweep in the modern era, and first since 1980, when they took three-straight from Fresno State (3/5-3/7)... With Oregon sweeping Nevada (3/20-3/21), the Ducks posted two sweeps in the same season for the first time since 1972... With a 9-8 victory over Arizona (3/28), the squad snapped the Wildcats' 15-game winning streak... A week later, the Ducks handed top-ranked Arizona State its first loss of the season, snapping the Devils' 24-game winning streak... SR RHP Justin LaTempa earned his first career and the school's first-ever Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week selection after throwing a complete game, striking out 10, against Washington State... SR C Eddie Rodriguez captured the first Pac-10 Player of the Week for Oregon after becoming the first Duck player since reinstatement to hit for the cycle, doing so against East Tennessee State (5/16).

OREGON STATE (32-24, 12-15): For the second-straight season and the sixth time in the last seven years, the Beavers reached the 30-win plateau... Head coach Pat Casey won his 700th career game when his club defeated Oregon, 6-5... Casey needs 25 wins to move into sole possession of second place on the school's all-time wins list... The six players selected in the first nine rounds of this year's MLB Draft set a school record, breaking the old mark of five players in the 2007 MLB Draft... The Beavers were 29-7 this season when their opponents scored five runs or less and 11-3 in one-run contests.

STANFORD (31-25, 14-13): FR 3B Kenny Diekroger earned Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors after leading the club with a .356 batting average, 77 hits and 22 multi-hit games, becoming the first Cardinal freshman since Edmund Muth (.388) in 1997 to lead the team in hitting as a freshman... During the year, Diekroeger produced a 23-game hitting streak, the fourth longest hit streak in school history since 1988... During the streak he batted .436 and drove in 20 runs... SO RHP Jordan Pries pitched a complete game as the Cardinal defeated UCLA, 8-4, snapping the Bruins school-record 22-game winning streak to start the season... SO LHP Brett Mooneyham struckout a career-high 13 batters against Washington (4/30), tying the most k's by a Cardinal pitcher since Erik Davis struck out 13 in 2008.

UCLA (51-17, 18-9): The Bruins made their first trip to the NCAA College World Series since the 1997 season... With an 11-3 victory over No. 3 Florida in the opening round of the CWS, UCLA won its first-ever game in the CWS...The runner-up finish is the best finish in school history... The 51 victories posted this season is a school record, besting the previous mark by six wins... Paced by SO RHP Trevor Bauer, a 2010 Golden Spikes Award semifinalist, the Bruins pitching staff was tops in the Conference in ERA (3.00), strikeouts (700), a school and Pac-10 record, and opponent batting average (.200)... Bauer led the; NCAA and the Conference with 165 strikeouts and 131.1 innings pitched... Bauer, SO RHP Gerrit Cole and JR LHP Rob Rasmussen each boasted 11 or more victories, the first time three Bruins accomplished that feat in a single season... With a two-hit complete game win against Cal State Fullerton in the Super Regionals, Rasmussen became the first Bruin pitcher to win 11 or more games in a season since LHP Jim Parque went 13-2 in 1997... TheĀ  club's 29 home victories this season are the most since 1982 when that Bruins squad went 29-10... UCLA opened the 2010 campaign with a school record 22-0 start.

USC (28-32, 7-20): SO 1B Ricky Oropesa led the Trojans in the triple crown categories, batting .353 with 20 home runs and 67 RBI. He hit 22 doubles, recorded a .711 slugging percentage and led the team with seven stolen bases... His 20 home runs place him in a tie for sixth place on the all-time USC single season list with Jason Lane (1999), while his 22 doubles put him in a tie for fifth... With 33 career long balls, Oropesa is 22 home runs away from breaking the school mark of 54 held by Mark McGwire (1982-84)... His 20 home runs led the Conference, becoming the first USC player to lead the Pac-10 in home runs since Geoff Jenkins (23) in 1995.

WASHINGTON (28-28, 11-16): FR INF Jacob Lamb became the first Husky to earn All-America after hitting a team-leading .347... Lamb started 54 of 56 games, collecting a club-high 70 hits, while ranking second on the squad with 14 doubles and 32 RBI... Lamb posted a stretch of 25-straight games without recording an error... With a 4-3 victory in 15 innings against then-No. 21 Stanford (5/2), the Huskies recorded their first ever three-game sweep of the Cardinal... In addition, the 15 inning contets was the longest game in the 13-year history of Husky Ballpark.

WASHINGTON STATE (37-22, 15-12): The Cougars making the postseason for the second-consecutive season in 2010... During opening weekend, the Cougars defeated Seattle U, 23-0, scoring the most runs since Feb. 14, 1999 against New Mexico State... Against Cal State Bakersfield (3/27), WSU overcame its largest deficit (six runs to win) at home since March 30, 2001 when it trailed UCLA 10-0 and won 12-11... With a 2-1 series victory over then-No. 1 Arizona State, the Cougars took a series against the Sun Devils for the first time in school history... WSU also completed a program first, sweeping California... JR RHP Chad Arnold became the first WSU pitcher since Aaron MacKenzie in 2004 to throw back-to-back complete games... Against USC, the Cougars scored 46 runs, the most runs scored in a three-game series since racking up 55 runs, April 14-19, 1999... Under skipper Donnie Marbut, the Cougars have made the NCAA Tournament two times.
