A QUICK LOOK AT THE BEARS

Offense:

California has experience on offense with eight starters returning. QB Kevin Riley has 23 starts under his belt but still faces a challenge from highly-regarded QB Beau Sweeney. All-Pac-10 TB Jahvid Best has departed, but the Bears always seem to have great depth at this position with TB Shane Vereen a proven commodity. Cal has good targets in WR Marvin Jones and TE Anthony Miller and four starters return on the offensive line led by OT Mitchell Schwartz.

Defense:

Six starters return on defense, although All-Pac-10 players CB Syd'Quan Thompson and DE Tyson Alualu have departed. Under new defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast, the Bears are expected to employ a more aggressive defensive scheme led by ILB Mike Mohamed, who led Cal in both tackles and interceptions last year, and DE Cameron Jordan. A preseason All-American, Mohammed also led the Conference tackles. All-Pac-10 and preseason All-American P Bryan Anger also returns.

The Schedule:

California's schedule appears favorable with seven home games, including three straight at home to close the season. However, there are potential road pitfalls at USC, Oregon State and Arizona.
