A QUICK LOOK AT THE CARDINAL

Offense:

Stanford looks to continue the upward trajectory that led to an 8-5 mark and an appearance in the Brut Sun Bowl last season. Eight starters return to the unit that led the Pac-10 in total offense last year, but Heisman Trophy runnerup Toby Gerhart and his 1,871 yards and 28 TDs is not among them. That places the offensive leadership of the team in the hands of sophomore QB Andrew Luck, who has the look of a star on the rise. Luck has capable receivers in the likes of WR Ryan Whalen and WR Chris Owusu, also an All-America pick as a kick returner, and is blessed with four returning starters on a talented offensive line.

Defense:

If the Cardinal wants to continue its progress up the Conference ladder, the defensive unit will need to step it up this year. Stanford looks to switch up the alignment from a 4-3 to a 3-4 and the strength of the unit appears to be up front. Improved play in the secondary will be a key to the defense bettering last year's numbers.

The Schedule:

Stanford plays six home and six away with some challenging trips to Oregon, California, UCLA and Notre Dame among others.
