Seven Pac-10 Teams ranked in the AVCA Preseason Poll
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD leads seven Pac-10 teams, including three in the top 10, in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Poll released Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinal is ranked No. 4, followed by WASHINGTON at No. 8 and USC at No. 10.
Stanford enters the 2010 season as the No. 4 team in the country after finishing last season with a 23-8 record and capturing its fourth-consecutive Pac-10 crown. Head coach John Dunning returns eight letterwinners, five starters and the libero. The Cardinal returnees include three senior All-Americans - outside hitter Alix Klineman, libero Gabi Ailes and setter/outside hitter Cassidy Lichtman.
Washington was picked No. 8 in the poll. The Huskies finished second last year in the Pac-10 with a 13-5 record and 24-6 overall mark. Washington advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
The Women of Troy round out Pac-10 teams in the top 10, holding on to the No. 10 spot. USC finished fifth in the Conference with a 10-8 record in 2009 and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Head coach Mick Haley welcomes a freshman class ranked No. 1 nationally by PrepVolleyball.com.
Cal nabbed the No. 11 position. The Golden Bears went 11-7 in Conference play last season, finished fourth in the Pac-10 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Regional Final. Led by new head coach Mike Sealy, UCLA was picked at No. 16, with Arizona close behind at No. 18 and Oregon at No. 20.
The 2010 Pac-10 women's volleyball season kicks off on Fri., Aug. 27 when all 10 teams take to the court.
