PREVIEW

With the return of six starters, including three All-Americans, eight letterwinners and another elite recruiting class, Stanford looks to win its fifth-consecutive Pac-10 title (13th overall). Stanford is led by a trio of senior All-Americans in libero Gabi Ailes, outside hitter Alix Klineman and outside hitter/setter Cassidy Lichtman. Ailes is already Stanford's all-time career digs leader with 1,641, which is 10th on the all-time Pac-10 list. She led the Conference with 5.23 digs per set in 2009. Klineman, a three-time AVCA All-American and All-Pac-10 selection, led the Cardinal last season with 4.25 kills per set, which ranked sixth in the Conference. Litchman was second on the team with 3.16 kills per set. She led the team with 22 double-doubles, including 10 triple-doubles. Head coach John Dunning has another talented group of freshmen this season, ranked third nationally by PrepVolleyball.com. The Cardinal appears to have the pieces to make a run to its 19th Final Four and battle for its seventh NCAA Championship.

Nike Big Four Classic - Gainesville, Fla.

Stanford plays in perhaps the most competitive preseason tournament of the season when it travels to Gainesville, Fla., for the Nike Big Four Classic. The tournament boasts three-time defending NCAA Champion Penn State, the 2009 runner-up Texas Longhorns and NCAA Regional semi-finalist Florida. Stanford fell to Florida in five sets at the UOP Banker's Classic last season. The Cardinal fell to Penn State, 3-0, in the 2008 NCAA Championship. Stanford and USC have been picked to finish first and second in the 2010 Preseason Coaches Poll, with one point separating the teams.

PLAYER TO WATCH

#10 Alix Klineman
Senior, Outside Hitter, Manhattan Beach, Calif.

A three-time AVCA All-American and All-Pac-10 honoree, Alix Klineman appeared in 115 sets for Stanford in 2009 and led the Cardinal for the third consecutive year with 489 kills (4.25 kps). She recorded her 1,000th-career kill in the opening set versus Saint Mary's on Sept. 19. Klineman tied for second on the team with 10 double-doubles on the season. She tallied double-digit kills in 25 matches, including 20-plus kills in 10 contests. Klineman is on pace to become the eighth player in Stanford history to register 1,000 career kills and digs, needing 159 digs in her final season to do this. In addition to her athletic accolades, Klineman was named a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Second Team All-American and Pac-10 All-Academic Honorable Mention last season.
