California's Morgan Named Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- CALIFORNIA senior forward Alex Morgan was named Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week of Aug. 31-Sept. 6, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Morgan paved the way for the Golden Bears to earn back-to-back wins last weekend at the Cal Invitational. On Friday against Rice, the Diamond Bar, Calif., native scored in the 11th minute off a direct kick from more than 20 yards out. Morgan struck again in the 86th minute, capping off Cal's scoring to give the squad a 4-1 victory.
On Sunday against Hawai'i, Morgan started off the team's scoring in the 24th minute when she beat three defenders and found the back of the net. At the beginning of the second half, she scored twice in the span of just under a minute. At the 46:23 mark, she received a pass from teammate Katrin Omarsdottir and slotted it just past the goalkeeper's hands. Then at 47:15, she put one away into the back-right corner of the net off an assist from Megan Jesolva. Morgan's hat trick led the Bears to an 8-1 victory over Hawai'i, with their eight goals marking the most the Rainbow Wahine has ever allowed in a match.
The five goals for Morgan were the most that she has ever scored in a two-game span. Her hat trick against Hawai'i was the fourth of her career and the 21st in program history. For her performance in both games, Morgan was a unanimous selection to the Cal Invitational All-Tournament Team.
This is California's 20th Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and the second of Morgan's career.
