California's Birnbaun Named Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - CALIFORNIA sophomore defender Steve Birnbaum was named Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 26-Nov. 1, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
The Irvine, Calif., native headed in the Bears' first goal, the first of his career, and set up the gamewinner in Cal's 2-1 double-overtime victory over Oregon State on Friday. Birnbaum tallied his fifth assist of the season when he set up senior forward Davis Paul's golden goal. Birnbaum contributed strong defensive performances in both the win over the Beavers and Sunday's 2-1 double-overtime win over Washington.
This is Birnbaum's first career weekly honor and Cal's 19th all-time Pac-10 Player of the Week.
With the two victories, No. 8 Cal improved to 11-2-3 overall and 7-1-1 in the Conference. The Bears have a bye week before hosting rival Stanford on Nov. 11 in the regular-season finale for both teams.
