California's Fitzpatrick Named Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- California freshman forward Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick was named Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 2-9, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
With California's postseason fate lying in the balance, Fitzpatrick rose to the occasion, scoring the game-winning goals in the Golden Bears' two games over the weekend as Cal claimed a 2-0 win over Oregon on Friday and a 1-0 double-overtime victory over then-No. 13 Oregon State on Sunday.
Against the Ducks, Fitzpatrick netted the first goal of the game and the first of her career in the 24th minute of play, less than 60 seconds after entering the match.
Against Oregon State, Fitzpatrick scored the golden goal in the 106th minute of the second overtime period to propel the Bears to their first upset of a ranked opponent this season. The win also helped solidify Cal's chance at a postseason bid, which came to fruition on Monday when it was selected to the field of 64 for the NCAA Tournament.
This is Fitzpatrick's first career Player of the Week honor, California's 21st all-time and second of the season as senior forward Alex Morgan was bestowed the honor on Sept. 7.
Fitzpatrick and the Golden Bears will travel to face Duke in the first round of NCAA Tournament action on Friday, November 12 in Gainesville, Fla. at 5:30 p.m. PT
