Sambu, Hasay Pace Pac-10 At NCAA Cross Country Championships
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- ARIZONA's Stephen Sambu and OREGON's Jordan Hasay led the Pac-10 at the NCAA Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships. Sambu was the Conference's top finisher, placing second among 246 finishers, while Hasay was third out of 253 finishers.
A junior, Sambu earned an individual at-large bid. He turned in a time of 29:26.5, finishing just over four seconds behind the winner, Samuel Chelanga of Liberty (29:22.2). Oregon's JR Luke Puskedra was the third overall finisher with a time of 29:38.0.
In the men's team competition, 2010 Pac-10 Champion STANFORD placed fourth out of 31 teams, earning 237 points, and finishing behind NCAA Champion Oklahoma State (73), Florida State (193) and Wisconsin (223). The Ducks, who won the NCAA West Regional, came in sixth with 289 points, and CALIFORNIA was 31st with 678 points.
In the women's individual competition, Hasay, the 2010 Pac-10 Individual Champion, was outrun by Villanova's Sheila Reid (20:06.9) and Emily Infeld (20:09.2) of Georgetown. Hasay ran the 6,000 meter race in a time of 20:13.0. Oregon SR Alex Kosinski was the Pac-10's second-highest finisher, coming in 19th with a time of 20:32.6, while Deborah Maier of California was 30th (20:43.7). Maier was an individual at-large runner.
Arizona, who placed second at the Pac-10 Championships, was 11th overall in the NCAA team competition collecting 372 points. Oregon was just behind with 378 points, followed by 2010 Pac-10 Women's Champion Stanford with 402 points. WASHINGTON's 413 points were good for 16th.
The women's title was claimed by Villanova, who scored 120 points. Florida State was second with 154 points, and Texas Texas posted 165 for third place.
