Scouting Report: Akeem Ayers And Steven Threet
LB - UCLA
Ht. 6'4 Wt. 255
Very versatile and athletic. Can make big plays. Fast and agile in pursuit. Can rush the passer and shows the flexible hips needed in pass coverage. Plays sideline to sideline with range and explosion. Smart, instinctive player with a nose for the football.
Very few weaknesses with this player, though he does need to find a home at one position. Could use more lower body strength to take on blockers when playing the inside run. More of an edge type than power player vs the run. Will freelance at times. Needs to be more disciplined.
This junior hybrid DE/LB is one of the more dominant defenders in all of college football. He lines up all over the field depending on the front and makes big plays in every game. He is one of the better UCLA defensive players of the last decade. Has the size and strength to play down as well as the athletic movement needed in coverage. Just an overall impressive physical specimen who plays with passion and desire to make things happen. The All-American candidate should be in line for several postseason awards at season's end.
QB - Arizona State
Ht. 6'5 Wt. 240
Outstanding size for the position. Possesses the arm strength needed to make all the necessary throws both deep and intermediate. Throws an accurate ball with a tight spiral and also has the ability to complete throws on the move. Can put touch on the ball underneath. Shows good pocket awareness and movement. Can step away from pressure and hit targets downfield.
Lacks great speed and overall escape ability. Will force some throws under pressure. Locks on to primary target at times. Not a real threat to run with the ball.
First year as true starter. Transferred from Michigan and sat out the 2009 season. Did start eight games in 2008 for the Wolverines. Has the necessary physical skills to be a starting QB at the NFL level. Needs to work on his decision-making under pressure but has a big time arm and is accurate both short and deep. Should continue to get better the more he plays, especially under the tutelage of offensive mastermind Dennis Erickson.
Dave Razzano is a former NFL scout with more than 22 years of professional scouting experience with the San Francisco 49ers, St. Louis Rams and Arizona Cardinals under NFL coaches Bill Walsh, George Seifert, Chuck Knox and Dick Vermeil.
