Oregon, Stanford Headline Pac-10 Bowl Selections
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Pac-10 Champion OREGON (12-0) finished the regular season ranked No. 2 in the final BCS Standings and will meet No. 1 Auburn in the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game on Monday, January 10, in Glendale, Ariz. STANFORD (11-1) concluded the regular season at No. 4 in the final BCS Standings, earning an automatic at-large berth in a BCS bowl, and will meet Virginia Tech in the Discover Orange Bowl on January 3 in Miami.
ARIZONA (7-5) and WASHINGTON (6-6) will meet a pair of Big 12 Conference opponents in the postseason as the Wildcats meet Oklahoma State in the Valero Alamo Bowl on December 29, and the Huskies will take on Nebraska in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl on December 30.
"Our teams have been justly rewarded for their season-long accomplishments and find themselves in exciting matchups during the bowl season," stated Commissioner Larry Scott.
"As Pac-10 Champion, Oregon is most deserving of its ranking in the final BCS Standings and the opportunity to compete for the national title in the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game. And with its impressive 11-win season, Stanford is certainly worthy of its at-large selection and will be an admirable representative of the Pac-10 in the Discover Orange Bowl."
The Pac-10 in the BCS (since the formation of the BCS in 1998):
• Since the Bowl Championship Series was created in 1998, this marks the third time that the Pac-10 has had a second team selected as an at-large representative.
2000: Washington - Rose Bowl, Oregon State - Fiesta Bowl
2002: Washington State - Rose Bowl, USC - Orange Bowl
2010: Oregon - Tostitos BCS National Championship Game, Stanford - Discover Orange Bowl
• It's the second time in Pac-10 history that two teams concluded the regular season ranked among the Top 5 in the final BCS Standings. The last time occurred in 2004 when USC was the top-ranked team and CALIFORNIA was No. 5. USC went on to defeat Oklahoma in the BCS National Championship Game.
• It's the first time Oregon will compete in the BCS National Championship Game, and the third time in a BCS bowl as the Ducks appeared in the 2002 Fiesta Bowl and 2010 Rose Bowl. Oregon has appeared in four Rose Bowl games prior to formation of the Bowl Championship Series.
• It's Stanford's second appearance in a BCS bowl, having played in the 2000 Rose Bowl. The Cardinal has appeared in 11 previous Rose Bowl games prior to the formation of the Bowl Championship Series.
