James, Luck Headed To New York For Heisman Presentation
University of Oregon running back LaMichael James and Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck are headed to the Big Apple after being named finalists for the Heisman Trophy, which honors the nation's most outstanding college football player.
James and Luck join Auburn quarterback Cam Newton and Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore as finalists for college football's top individual honor. The four student-athletes will be in attendance for the presentation of the Heisman Trophy in New York City on Saturday, Dec. 11. The winner will be announced during a live televised special on ESPN beginning at 5:00 p.m. PT.
James, a sophomore from Texarkana, Texas, is the nation's leading rusher with 1,682 yards and also tops the NCAA in scoring, averaging two touchdowns (12.0 points) per game. He established a Pac-10 freshman rushing standard a year ago with 1,546 yards, set the sophomore conference mark this season. He ranks second all-time at Oregon with 3,228 rushing yards and is tied for second with 36 total touchdowns. James and the Oregon Ducks will play Auburn for the BCS National Championship on Jan. 10.
Luck, who led Stanford to an 11-1 record this season and a berth in the Discover Orange Bowl, has completed 245-of-349 passes for 3,051 yards and a single-season record 28 touchdowns on the year. Luck also leads the Pac-10 and ranks seventh nationally in passing efficiency at 166.10. He is one of four Stanford quarterbacks to throw for over 3,000 yards in a single-season, joining Steve Stenstrom (3,627; 1993), John Elway (3,242; 1982) and Todd Husak (3,092; 1998) as a member of Stanford's elite 3,000-yard club.
Luck's selection marks the second consecutive year a Stanford player has been among the finalists for the Heisman Trophy. Running back Toby Gerhart finished second in last year's Heisman Trophy race, 26 points behind Alabama's Mark Ingram in the closest voting in the 75 year history of the award.
