Fontan Named Pac-10 Men's Basketball Player of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - USC's Jio Fontan was named Pac-10 Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 20-26, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. The junior guard led the Trojans to a pair of victories over No. 19 Tennessee and Lehigh last week.
The Paterson, N.J., native averaged 17.0 points, 4.0 assists and 3.5 steals in just his second and third games for USC. In the Trojans' 65-64 upset win at Tennessee, Fontan scored 13 points, dished out four assists and had three steals. He was 4-for-4 with two steals and two assists in the first half to help USC jump out to a 38-32 lead at halftime. In his first game at the Galen Center, Fontan led USC with 21 points in the 76-49 win over Lehigh. He also added four steals and four assists in the game.
It is Fontan's first career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and the 32nd weekly recognition for USC all-time.
The Trojans begin Conference play at home, hosting WASHINGTON on Wednesday at 7:30 and WASHINGTON STATE on Friday at 3 p.m.
