Pohlen Named Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- After leading STANFORD to three wins last week, including a pair of upsets against top-five opponents, senior guard Jeanette Pohlen was named Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 27-Jan. 2, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Jeanette Pohlen (Brea, Calif.) had an outstanding week, leading the Cardinal to wins over then-No. 4 Xavier, then-No. 1 Connecticut and California in the Pac-10 opener. She averaged 21.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game in the three contests, highlighted by a 31-point, nine-rebound and six-assist effort in Stanford's 71-59 win over the UConn, snapping the Huskies' historic 90-game winning streak.
Pohlen shot 50 percent from the floor last week, including 42.1 percent from three-point range. She missed just one free thrown in 16 attempts, including a perfect 10-for-10 performance from the charity stripe against the Huskies.
In the 89-52 win over the Musketeers, Pohlen was one rebound shy of a double-double, scoring 19 points to go with nine boards and six assists. In the Conference opener in Berkeley, she netted 15 points with three rebounds and four assists to lead Stanford to a 78-45 victory over the Golden Bears.
It is Pohlen's second-career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and the first this season for a Cardinal. It is also the 76th all-time selection for Stanford.
The Cardinal put its 52-game win streak on the line this weekend, hosting Arizona on Thursday, Jan. 6 and Arizona State on Saturday, Jan. 8.
