Arizona's Chitwood and USC's Hosszu Named Pac-10 Swimmers of the Month
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA redshirt junior Cory Chitwood and USC junior Katinka Hosszu have been named Pac-10 Swimmers of the Month for December, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Chitwood had a stellar performance at the highly competitive Texas Invitational, winning the 100y and 200y backstroke events, 200y IM and 400y medley relay. The Union, Ky., native set two NCAA automatic cut times and posted some of the fastest backstroke times in the country this season. Last year's NCAA champion in the 200y backstroke, Chitwood looks to have a shot at winning three NCAA events this spring as he recorded 46.56 in the 100y back, 1:41.07 in the 200y back and 1:43.47 in the 200y IM. His 200y back performance is currently the nation's top time. Chitwood also helped the Wildcats to an NCAA automatic cut time (3:08.16) in the 400y medley relay and a second-place finish in the 200y medley relay.
Hosszu won three titles at the U.S. Short Course National Championships, claiming the 200y IM (1:53.47), 400y IM (4:00.03) and 200y butterfly (1:51.45) events. All of her performances were school records and the 400y IM time set a meet record. Additionally, all three finishes were NCAA "A" cut times. The Bafa, Hungary, native also swam a leg on the winning 800y freestyle relay team and the second-place 400y freestyle relay team. At the 2010 Short Course World Championships, Hosszu was fourth in both the 200m butterfly (2:04.56) and the 200m IM (2:06.88), both school records.
This is Chitwood's second career Pac-10 Swimmer of the Month honor and the fourth for Arizona all-time. On the women's side, this is Hosszu's second career monthly award and the sixth for the Trojans all-time.
