WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- CALIFORNIA senior Pedro Zerbini and USC senior Maria Sanchez have been named Pac-10 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for January 10-16, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
In the first weekend of 2011 spring competition, Zerbini went undefeated in singles play. On Thursday he defeated No. 96-ranked Clifford Marsland of Tulsa, 6-4, 6-4, to help lead the Golden Bears to a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over the Golden Hurricane. Against Texas on Saturday, the Sao Paulo, Brazil, native defeated Ed Corrie, 7-6, 6-3. In doubles, Zerbini paired up with freshman Ben McLachlan to earn a pair of victories over the weekend. The tandem claimed an 8-3 win over De Klerk/Turpin of Tulsa on the third court and then defeated Damico/Holiner of Texas on the second court.
USC's Maria Sanchez swept both the singles and doubles titles at the Freeman Memorial Championships, hosted by UNLV over the weekend. As the top seed at the tournament, Sanchez tore through the singles bracket, defeating No. 2 seed Olivia Janowicz of Florida, 6-3, 6-0 in the championship. On her way to the singles crown, the Modesto, Calif., native beat players from Oregon, UNLV, Arizona State and Stanford. In doubles, Sanchez secured the championship alongside freshman teammate Kaitlyn Christian, as the No. 3 seeded Trojan pair beat teams from North Carolina, Stanford and Arizona State, en route to defeating UCLA's Jones/Johansson 8-4 in the championship match.
