WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Seven current and former Pac-10 swimmers claimed spots on the U.S. roster for the 2011 FINA World Championships, to be held July 24-31 in Shanghai, China. The World Championships will be the last major international competition before the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Former CALIFORNIA swimmers Natalie Coughlin and Dana Vollmer, as well as current Golden Bear Caitlin Leverenz were named to the roster. Cal head coach Teri McKeever, the head coach for the U.S. women in London next year, will serve as an assistant coach at the World Championships. Former ARIZONA star Amanda Beard will also head to China with Wildcat coach Frank Busch, who will serve as the head women's coach. Rebecca Soni, who swam at USC, completes the Pac-10 representation on the women's squad.
Current Cal swimmer Nathan Adrian and Stanford's Chad La Tourette will represent the Pac-10 on the men's side in Shanghai.
The U.S. swimmers were selected to the Worlds team based on their performances at the 2010 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships and the 2010 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships, both held last August.
