Cardinal Sweep Pac-10 Weekly Gymnastics Awards
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- STANFORD senior Shelley Alexander and sophomore Ashley Morgan have been awarded Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week and Pac-10 Special Performance of the Week honors, respectively, for the week of Jan. 17-23, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Hailing from Seguin, Texas, Alexander anchored Stanford's beam lineup with a 9.925 score to give the Cardinal momentum in its effort to overtake Pac-10 foe UCLA on the final rotation. Alexander tied her career-best on her winning beam routine and also captured the all-around victory with a 39.350 as Stanford improved to 7-0 on the season. It was the Cardinal's second triumph over the Bruins this season, with the first win coming in the Pac-10 Showcase.
This is Alexander's first Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week honor and 20th in Cardinal history.
Ashley Morgan wowed the packed house at Burnham Pavilion by adding a double Arabian to her floor routine and the additional difficulty resulted in a high score of 9.925 to win the floor exercise in Stanford's dual-meet victory over visiting UCLA. Morgan, a Danville, Calif., native has scored 9.925 in both meets this season and leads the nation in scoring average.
The Special Performance of the Week nod is Morgan's first of her career and Stanford's 4th all-time.
