Seven Pac-10 Softball Squads Ranked in Preseason Polls
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Seven Pac-10 squads were ranked in both the USA Today/NFCA and the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 polls, the most of any Conference. The ranked squads include ARIZONA, ARIZONA STATE, CALIFORNIA, OREGON, STANFORD, UCLA and WASHINGTON.
In the USA Today/NFCA preseason poll, the defending national champion UCLA Bruins received 27 of 30 first place votes and were picked first. Picked No. 2 was national runner-up Arizona. Washington was picked tenth in the preseason poll, followed by California at No. 12, Arizona State at No. 13 and Oregon at No. 14. Stanford, the final Pac-10 squad in the poll, was slated at No. 20.
In the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top-25 poll, the tide was turned, as 2010 national runner-up Arizona was ranked No. 1 in the poll with nine first place votes. UCLA was picked second, with 10 first place votes and Arizona State rounded out the Pac-10 teams in the top-10 as the Sun Devils were picked 10th. Washington took the No. 11 spot, California was picked 12th, Oregon at No. 14 and rounding out the Pac-10 picks was Stanford at No. 18.
The Pac-10 is coming off a stellar season and a NCAA Women's College World Series final that featured two Pac-10 squads in UCLA and Arizona. The 2011 Pac-10 season will get underway on Feb. 10, as Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon and Oregon State all turn to the diamond. The rest of the squads, including the Bruins and the Wildcats, will begin their seasons on Feb. 11.
