USC's Gomez and Washington's Dy Named Pac-10 Tennis Players of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- USC freshman Emilio Gomez and WASHINGTON junior Denise Dy have been named Pac-10 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for January 24-30, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
In only his second week of competition for the Trojans, Gomez picked up three doubles and three singles victories in a winning week of action for USC. Playing doubles with teammate Daniel Nguyen, the Guayaquil, Ecuador, native clinched the doubles point for USC in all three matches, as they defeated Florida State, 6-1, San Diego State, 6-1 and Indiana, 7-0. In singles action, Gomez fell in his first set during USC's midweek clash with No. 27 Florida State, but lost just six games in the next six sets played, going 3-for-3 in singles action as well. He first defeated Florida State's Blake Davis, 5-7, 6-1, 6-0, San Diego State's Juan Florez, 6-1, 6-4 and Indiana's Stephen Vogl, 6-0, 6-1. Gomez opens his USC career with a 4-0 singles mark and a 5-0 doubles run with Nguyen. Overall, the Trojans are 5-0 on the season.
Dy's play lifted the No. 24 Huskies to back-to-back upsets over a pair of Top-20 opponents over the weekend, helping Washington qualify for the ITA Team Indoor Championships for the first time since 2005. In both matches, the score was tight at 3-3, with only Dy's No. 1 singles match remaining and she came back from the brink of defeat to pull out both victories. On Saturday, the Huskies upended No. 16 Texas with Dy coming back from 5-2 down in the third set to win the final five games and defeat eighth-ranked Aeriel Ellis, 2-6, 7-6, 7-5. Against No. 14 Florida State on Sunday, Dy once again clinched the win on the road, this time saving match points in a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win against 42nd-ranked Katie Rybakova. Dy and teammate Venise Chan won their No. 1 doubles match to clinch the doubles point against the Seminoles. The San Jose, Calif., native is ranked sixth nationally and is 4-0 on the season. This weekend's stellar play marks the first time the Huskies have defeated Top-20 opponents on consecutive days since the 2003 season. The Huskies are now 4-0 on the season.
This is the first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for Gomez and the Conference-leading 16th overall honor for USC. For Dy, this is her second Pac-10 Player of the Week honor, second-straight this season for Washington and eighth overall.
