WSU's Romberg Named Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- WASHINGTON STATE freshman guard/forward Sage Romberg was named Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 31-February 7, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. Romberg helped the Cougars to their first weekend sweep in Pac-10 play since January 2001, claiming wins over the Oregon schools.

Sage Romberg (McKinleyville, Calif.) came off the bench in both contests against the Oregon schools and averaged 16.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. With the victories, WSU claims five Pac-10 wins so far, the most for the team since the 2000-01 campaign.

In the 67-64 win over OSU, Romberg flirted with a double-double, tallying 17 points and pulling down eight rebounds to rally WSU from a 13-point, second-half deficit. Of her 17 points, 12 came in the second half, sparking a comeback that would tie for the fourth-largest overcome in program history. Romberg also hit a pair of free throws in the final 1:17 which gave Washington State the lead for good.

Two days later, Romberg scored 15 points in WSU's 96-90 win over Oregon. Romberg sparked another decisive run in the second half, knocking down a three pointer that gave WSU a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the game. She was 3-for-5 from behind the arc. The 96 points by WSU were the most for the Cougars since a 96-77 victory over Appalachian State, Nov. 20, 1998, and the most in a Pac-10 game since a 102-69 win at Oregon, Jan. 20, 1991.

For the week, Romberg was 10-for-19 from the field, including 4-for-7 from long range, and was almost perfect from the free throw line, converting on eight of nine attempts.

It is Romberg's first-career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and Washington State's 12th all-time selection.

The Cougars head to the Bay Area this weekend to play top-five ranked Stanford on Thursday, Feb. 10 and California on Saturday, Feb. 12. The game versus the Golden Bears will be nationally televised on Fox Sports Net (FSN).
