California's Shields and Leverenz Named Pac-10 Swimmers of the Month
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - CALIFORNIA sophomores Tom Shields and Caitlin Leverenz have been named Pac-10 Swimmers of the Month for January, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Shields was instrumental in the Golden Bears' upending of then-No. 2 Arizona in Tucson. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native captured the 200y freestyle (1:37.57), 200y butterfly (1:49.57) and 100y butterfly (47.85) against the Wildcats. Shields also swam the anchor leg of Cal's winning 400y free relay team. Against Arizona State, he won the 100y free (45.33) and swam the backstroke for the victorious 400y medley relay squad. The Bears moved to the No. 1 ranking in the TYR/CSCAA Poll following their strong performances in Arizona.
Leverenz, the 2010 Pac-10 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year, led fourth-ranked Cal to dual-meet victories over Arizona State, No. 7 Arizona, No. 3 USC and No. 21 UCLA in January. The Tucson, Ariz., native won four events at ASU, four at Arizona, three against USC and four versus UCLA. In the meet against the Trojans in Berkeley, Leverenz swam a leg on the winning 400y medley relay team that posted a school-record and NCAA B consideration time of 3:36.36. In January, USA Swimming named Leverenz to its roster for the 2011 FINA World Championships this summer.
This is Shields' first career Pac-10 Swimmer of the Month honor and the fifth for the Cal men all-time. On the women's side, this is Leverenz's first career monthly award and the sixth for the Bears all-time.
