Boise State Holds Narrow Lead at Pac-10 Championships

Boise State, ranked sixth in the nation, holds a narrow lead after the opening session of the Pac-10 Wrestling Championships in Corvallis, Ore.

The Broncos have six wrestlers who advance to the championship finals and cling to a narrow 121.5-116.0 lead over host Oregon State.

The Beavers narrowed the gap by recording the Championships' biggest upset thus far in the 184-pound weight class, a 9-2 semifinal victory by Brice Arand over top-seeded and two-time defending Pac-10 Champion Kirk Smith of Boise Smith. Smith, the national runner-up at 184 a year ago, entered the tournament ranked third in the country and had beaten Arand in their two previous meetings this season.

Arand's win came just minutes before teammate Clayton Jack's dramatic rally in the final seconds to defeat David Morgan from Cal State Bakersfield, 4-3, to advance to the heavyweight finals. Jack became the sixth Beaver to reach the championship round, matching Boise State's six finalists.

Arizona State's Anthony Robles has been the most dominant performer through the first two rounds. Robles, who was born without a right leg, won his first two matches in the 125-pound class by a combined 32-1. The Tempe, Ariz., native entered the tournament ranked No. 1 in the country with a 28-0 record.

Boise State's six finalists are Andrew Hochstrasser (133), Levi Jones (141), Jason Chamberlain (149), Adam Hall (157), Kurt Swartz (165), J.T. Felix (heavyweight).

Oregon State has Jason Lara (125), Garrett Drucker (133), Scott Sakaguchi (149), Colby Covington (174), Arand (184), Jack (heavyweight) wrestling for titles.

Four Sun Devil wrestlers placed into the championships: Robles (125), Bubba Jenkins (157), Jake Meredith (184), Luke Macchiaroli (197).

Stanford's two finalists are Nick Amuchastegui (174), Zack Giesen (197).

Cal Poly and Cal State Bakersfield each have one wrestler in the championship round. Trevor Hall reached the finals in 165 for Bakersfield and Boris Novachkov has advanced at 141 for Cal Poly.
