UCLA's Tiumalu and Oregon's Moore Named Pac-10 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- UCLA freshman catcher Alyssa Tiumalu was named Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week and OREGON sophomore pitcher Jessica Moore was named Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 21-27, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Alyssa Tiumalu had hits in all six games for the Bruins last week, going 10-for-16 (.625) with two home runs, five runs batted in and five runs scored in helping UCLA to a 4-2 record. Tiumalu began the week at Cal State Northridge on Wednesday, reaching in all three plate appearances on a double, a walk and a hit by pitch. She also scored a run. Then against some of the toughest competition in the nation at the Cathedral City Classic last weekend, Tiumalu had nine hits in 15 at-bats (.600). The Elk Grove, Calif., native extended her hitting streak to 11 with hits in all six games last week and hit her first two collegiate home runs, including a walk-off shot in a victory on Sunday against Northwestern.
The weekend began against then-No. 4 Florida on Friday, as Tiumalu went 2-for-3 and accounted for the Bruins' lone run on her first collegiate homer, a solo shot in the second. In the nightcap against then-No. 6 Oklahoma, the freshman had another two-hit game, adding a run scored and a walk to reach in all three of her plate appearances. Against Northwestern on Sunday, she posted her second, walk-off hit in as many weekends, belting a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel the Bruins to a 5-4 victory. In the second game on Sunday against Ohio State, Tiumalu notched her first three-hit game on three singles, adding a pair of RBI and scoring a run. Tiumalu slugged 1.062 for the week and had a .684 on base percentage. She also did not commit an error in 46 attempts behind the plate. On the season, she leads the Bruins with a .457 batting average, adding two homers and 10 runs batted in.
Moore went 3-0 in the Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton, Calif. last weekend, posting a 0.00 ERA and leading UO in innings (3), wins (3), complete games (1), innings (16.0), and opponent batting average (.115). She also allowed no more than three hits in any of her appearances. The Sutter, Calif., native her first shutout of the season in her first start of the weekend, a one-hit, 8-0 win over San Jose State. The next day, she continued to frustrate the Spartans in a 6-0 combined shutout when she pitched six of the seven innings. In Monday's finale, she earned revenge against Pacific who had topped the Ducks, 4-2, after a six-run sixth inning earlier in the weekend. Moore allowed only two infield hits, and the Tigers' only run was unearned and scored after a pair of infield miscues in the fifth inning. On the season, Moore leads the team in ERA (0.91), strikeouts (62), innings (46.1), starts (8), and complete games (3).
The honor is the first of Tiumalu's career and the 114th all-time for UCLA. This is the second-career Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor for Moore and the 33rd all-time for Oregon.
Both UCLA and Oregon will return to the field on Friday, March 4. Next up for the Bruins is a trip to San Diego for the Campbell/Cartier Classic and the Ducks will travel to Lake Buena Vista, Fla. for the ESPN Rise Tournament.
