California's Reid and Stanford's Gerhart Named Pac-10 Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- CALIFORNIA junior outfielder Elia Reid and STANFORD sophomore Teagan Gerhart have been named Pac-10 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 28-March 6, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Reid led the Bears to a 3-1 record over the weekend at the DeMarini Classic, driving in 10 RBI thanks to her two homers and two triples, as she hit a team-high .417. Heading into the weekend, she was only hitting .130 with only one RBI but thanks to her stellar performances in Fullerton, she is now hitting .229 with 11 RBI, which is second on the team. Across the four games, the Buena Park, Calif., native paced the Bears with a 1.250 slugging percentage and was third with a .417 on-base percentage and accounted for 15 of Cal's 34 runs scored.
In part because of Reid's stellar play, the Bears rolled over IPFW, 18-8, on Friday. In that game, she had three hits, including a three-run triple in the first and a two-run homer in the fifth, for a game-high six RBI all the while coming home to score runs. In the close game between Cal and Iowa, Reid dished out her second homer in as many games, putting the Bears ahead for good at 6-2. Leading 2-0 against Murray State, Reid tripled to gap in right center, scoring two teammates and putting the Bears up 4-0 and shortly thereafter upping that lead to 5-0 when she crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from her sister, Jamia Reid.
Stanford's Gerhart went 3-0 on the weekend and boasted a 1.33 ERA. She racked up 33 strikeouts, averaging 11 per contest. In three complete games, Gerhart allowed just four earned runs and issued just four walks. In the team's 2-1 win over Iowa, Gerhart struck out nine Hawkeyes without allowing an earned run. Against UCSB, Gerhart registered a then-season high of 10 strikeouts. In her third win of the weekend, over Cal State Northridge, the Norco, Calif., native turned in a magnificent performance. She finished with a career high 14 strikeouts and held a no-hitter through four innings of play. She retired the entire Northridge lineup in order to start the game, including striking out the first six Matador hitters. Offensively, Gerhart also recorded four hits on the weekend, including a double and a home run.
This is Reid's first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and the second of Gerhart's career.
Up next for the Golden Bears is a trip to Honolulu, Hawai'i on March 16 to participate in the Hawai'i Spring Fling. The Cardinal will have the weekend off and will host the Stanford Louisville Slugger Classic beginning on Friday, March 18.
