Third-seed Arizona State is moving on to the second round of the Pacific Life Pac-10 Basketball Tournament after a gritty game that produced 39 turnovers in 40 minutes and seeing a 15-point lead whittle away down to a 50-44 win.
"I give all of the credit to Oregon State," said Arizona State coach Charli Turner Thorne. "They are a tough team and just don't go away. All three of our games with them were hard. We would get a lead, they would fight back and I give them all of the credit in the world."
Arizona State was able to pull away with the win by out-rebounding Oregon 35-25, a part of the game that Turner Thorne has engrained in her player's brains as to what earns the win.
"When you control the boards, you control the game," recited Arizona State center Becca Tobin.
Arizona State was led by Dymond Simon's 13 points and Kimberly Brandon's six rebounds.
No matter how many times Arizona State tried to pull away, the gritty Oregon State Beavers kept things close.
"I am proud of this group," said Oregon State coach Scott Rueck. "This is a group that can hold their head high because they did everything right all season long. They were put together in September and here we are battling with the No. 3-seed in the league. I couldn't be more proud of them."
Oregon State was paced by Sage Indendi and Alyssa Martin with 10 points each and Earlysia Marchbanks' eight rebounds.
Arizona State will now face the winner of the California and Washington game later today.
