Arizona State's Newman, USC's Odom Named Pac-10 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA STATE senior outfielder Matt Newman has been named Pac-10 Player of the Week and USC senior right-handed pitcher Logan Odom has been named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for March 7-13, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Newman was the catalyst in Arizona State taking two of three on its road trip at Auburn. The Phoenix, Ariz., native went 5-for-11 (.455) and slugged an amazing 1.182. He belted two home runs in the 9-5 win on Saturday, driving in four runs. He also doubled twice in the series, added another RBI on Sunday and scored four times. In addition, Newman twice laid down perfect sacrifice bunts to move runners into scoring position.
This marks the first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for Newman and Arizona State's 97th all-time Player of the Week selection.
Odom threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings Sunday as the Trojans upset No. 13 UCLA, 2-0, in the Dodgertown Classic finale. The Central Point, Ore., native allowed just four hits with two walks and recorded four strikeouts in front of 11,680 at Dodger Stadium.
