UCLA's Harrison and California's Henderson Named Pac-10 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- UCLA junior outfielder/first baseman Andrea Harrison and CALIFORNIA sophomore pitcher Jolene Henderson have been named Pac-10 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week for March 7-13, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Harrison had an outstanding weekend at the Long Beach Marriott Invitational, posting 12 hits in 16 at-bats for a .750 batting average to go with 10 runs batted in, five runs scored, two home runs and five doubles. Harrison slugged 1.438 for the weekend and had a .778 on base percentage. The Garden Grove, Calif., native opened the weekend with a pair of two-hit games on Friday. Against Sacramento State, the junior posted a pair of doubles, scored a run and also drew a walk. Harrison added a double and a solo home run in the nightcap versus Long Beach State.
On Saturday against Cal State Fullerton, Harrison recorded her first-career, four-hit game, driving in four runs. All of her hits were singles, as she knocked in a pair in the first inning and one apiece in the fourth and fifth frames. The junior notched a double and a walk in Saturday's second contest versus BYU, scoring twice. Harrison closed the weekend with another excellent performance against Saint Mary's, going 3-for-3 with five runs batted in. In the first inning, she got the Bruins on the board with an RBI single. Harrison added an RBI single in the second and crushed a three-run homer in the third.
Harrison leads the Bruins with eight home runs, 28 runs batted in and a .784 slugging percentage. She is also second with seven doubles and 16 walks, fourth with a .495 on base percentage and 21 runs scored and fifth with a .365 batting average.
Cal's Henderson continues to impress with her tireless arm in the circle, pitching the Bears to a perfect 4-0 record at this weekend's Bayer CropScience Classic in Fresno, Calif. The Elk Grove, Calif., native notched a 0.75 ERA in 28 innings of work, striking out 28 and walking just two of the batters she faced, landing her a spot on the all-tournament team. Henderson gave up three earned runs, limiting her opponents to a .130 batting average.
Henderson shut out Troy and Drake to produce 1-0 and 3-0 victories over those teams, respectively. Though Fresno State scored twice on the Bears, Henderson was practically flawless in the circle with no earned runs versus the Bulldogs, who received votes in both polls last week.
In her 17 appearances this season, Henderson has only had an ERA higher than 1.00 in three games, giving her a season ERA of 0.80.
For Harrison, this is her second career weekly honor and the 114th all-time for UCLA. This is Henderson's second weekly honor of the season and her career. It is the 65th overall nod for California.
The Bruins will have the weekend off and will have a doubleheader with UCSB on Monday, March 21. Up next for the Golden Bears is a trip to Honolulu, Hawai'i on March 16 to participate in the Hawai'i Spring Fling.
