Stanford's Staab and USC's Hosszu Named Pac-10 Swimmers of the Month
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD senior Austin Staab and USC junior Katinka Hosszu have been named Pac-10 Swimmers of the Month for February, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Staab helped the Cardinal record wins over No. 8 USC and No. 1 California in February. The Westerville, Ohio, native won the 100y butterfly against the Trojans in 48.05. Staab also swam on the victorious 200y freestyle relay and 400y medley relay teams. Stanford broke the 13-year pool record in the 200y free relay, touching the wall in 1:19.30. In the upset of the Golden Bears, Staab won the 200y individual medley and swam a leg on the 400y free relay team that clinched the six-point victory in the day's final event.
Hosszu won three titles at the 2011 Pac-10 Championships, claiming the 200y and 400y individual medley races and the 200y fly. The Bafa, Hungary, native became the first Trojan to win three events in the same meet since 2003. Hosszu won her second-straight crown in the 200y fly while her 200y IM time was a school record (1:53.33). For all of this, she was named Women's Swimmer of the Meet. Earlier in the month in USC's win over UCLA, Hosszu won two events she does not normally compete in, the 1650y free and the 100y fly.
This is Staab's first career Pac-10 Swimmer of the Month honor and the Conference-leading 10th for the Stanford men all-time. On the women's side, this is Hosszu's third career monthly award and the seventh for the Trojans all-time.
