Stanford's Hansen and Gerhart Earn Pac-10 Softball Weekly Honors
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- STANFORD junior shortstop Ashley Hansen and her teammate, sophomore pitcher Teagan Gerhart have been named Pac-10 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week for April 4-10, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Hansen led No. 13 Stanford to two wins at No. 6 UCLA last weekend to earn its first Pac-10 series win of the season. The wins were the first for the Cardinal over the Bruins since 2007. The Chandler, Ariz., native led the way with a .615 batting average (8-13), including two doubles, three RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. She posted a .769 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage on the weekend. In the first game of the series, a 6-5 win for UCLA in a 14 inning marathon, Hansen tallied two hits, a stolen base and a sacrifice fly for an RBI. She also made several solid defensive plays to keep the Cardinal in the contest. In Saturday's 6-2 win for Stanford, Hansen was a perfect 4-4 with two doubles, an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Her two doubles brings her season total to 19, which leads the conference. In Sunday's rubber game, Hansen was 2-3 at the plate and also drove in a run as Stanford took the season series from UCLA for the first time in four years. On the year, Hansen has already matched her hit total from all of last season (59) and produced more doubles (19), triples (3) and home runs (5) than a year ago.
Gerhart showed her toughness in the circle this weekend, throwing 21.1 innings and a total of 391 pitches in three appearances. She posted a 1.97 ERA on the weekend, striking out 20 UCLA hitters and giving up just six runs. Her weekend began on Friday in which she threw 231 pitches in a career-high 13.0 innings. The Norco, Calif., native tallied 12 strikeouts, her fourth double-digit strikeout game of the year. Gerhart was pulled after the 13th inning and was not the pitcher of record in the loss. She also tallied a hit, drew a walk, stole a base and scored two of Stanford's five runs in the game. On Saturday, Gerhart entered the game in relief in the bottom of the sixth inning. She allowed just one hit and struck out the final UCLA batter to give Stanford its first win over UCLA in four years. On Sunday, Gerhart earned her 14th win of the season in a 5-1 Stanford win, giving the Cardinal the series win for the first time since 2007. She tossed her 16th complete game of the season, allowing just one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. Offensively, she went 2-2 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored. Overall, Gerhart hit .429 on the weekend with a .571 slugging percentage and a .556 on-base percentage.
Hansen now has two Player of the Week honors in her career. This is Gerhart's third career honor and second of the 2011 season. Stanford has 48 weekly honors all-time.
The Cardinal will host San Jose State tonight at 6 p.m. in a non-conference tilt and will welcome Oregon State for a three-game series beginning Friday.
