California's Zeigenhirt and Henderson Named Pac-10 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- CALIFORNIA sophomore catcher Lindsey Ziegenhirt and her teammate, sophomore pitcher Jolene Henderson have been named Pac-10 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week for April 11-17, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Ziegenhirt hit .500 in a key week of home games, helping Cal to a series sweep of No. 17 Oregon. In four games last week, Ziegenhirt led the team in slugging (1.375), RBI (six), total bases (11) and walks (four) and she was second in hitting (.500) and on-base percentage (.667) in addition to owning a perfect fielding percentage. The Elk Grove, Calif., native's best performance came Sunday, when the Ducks scored their first runs in 14 innings and Ziegenhirt and the Bears were down, 2-0, in the bottom of the first in the last game of the series. With the bases loaded, she doubled down the right-field line, just inches fair, to clear the bases and give Cal a key 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the sixth in the same game, with the Bears up 4-2, After fouling off four pitches, Ziegenhirt smacked the ball to the stands in center field to put the Bears up by three.
Henderson won three games and picked up a save for the Golden Bears last week by helping pilot her team to a non-conference win over St. Mary's (CA) and a three-game Pac-10 sweep of then 17th-ranked Oregon. Over the four-game stretch, the sophomore allowed no earned runs off of 15 hits, while striking out 23 and walking only five. Henderson ended the week with a 0.00 ERA, an opponent's batting average of .190 and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. The native of Elk Grove, Calif., struck out seven batters in each of her three wins on the week and added an additional two in her three-inning appearance during the series finale with Oregon, in which she registered her first save of the season and the fourth of her career. In three of the four games, Henderson struck out seven batters for a 23 total Ks this weekend. Henderson also recorded two shutouts on the week, which moved her to 10 total on the season. For her efforts, Henderson was named NFCA National Player of the Week.
Henderson has won three Pitcher of the Week honors for the season and her career. This is Ziegenhirt's first career Player of the Week honor. California now has 67 Players of the Week all-time.
The Golden Bears return to the friendly confines of Levine-Fricke Field to host Bay Area rival Stanford, with the Big Game three game series beginning on Thursday, April 21 at 3 p.m. PT .
