Gaviglio, Bauer Named To NCBWA All-America Teams
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA junior right-handed pitcher Trevor Bauer and OREGON STATE junior right-handed pitcher Sam Gaviglio have been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's 2011 Division I All-America teams, the organization announced Wednesday. Bauer was named to the first team, and Gaviglio was a third-team selection. Both are also semifinalists for National Pitcher of the Year by the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
Bauer, a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award and the NCBWA District IX Player of the Year, set the Pac-10 single-season strikeouts record with 203, surpassing Mark Prior's previous record of 202 strikeouts for USC in 2001. Bauer finished the season with a 13-2 record and a 1.25 ERA, surrendering only 22 runs (19 earned). He is UCLA's all-time record holder in career strikeouts (460), wins (34) and innings pitched (373.1).
Gaviglio completed the season with a 12-3 record and a 2.54 ERA, ranked sixth in the Pac-10. His 12 wins tied for fourth-most in a single season at Oregon State and are second in the conference. Gaviglio tallied 116 strikeouts over 120.2 innings, throwing four complete games including two shutouts.
