Five Pac-12 Teams Ranked In Preseason Poll
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Five Pac-12 Conference women's volleyball teams were ranked among the top 15 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Coaches poll, which was released Monday by the AVCA. Two of the top three teams in the nation are from the Pac-12, with USC placing second and CALIFORNIA coming in third.
The Women of Troy received five first-place votes and 1,424 points to claim the No. 2 position be-hind 2010 NCAA Champion Penn State, who garnered 54 first-place votes and 1,486 points. The Golden Bears accumulated 1,354 points with one first-place vote. USC and Cal both represented the Conference in the national semifinals last year in Kansas City, with the Bears advancing to the national championship game.
STANFORD and WASHINGTON were ranked among the top 10. The Cardinal receiving 1,150 points and the Huskies 1,112 points. UCLA placed just out of the top 10, earning 903 points to oc-cupy the No. 11 spot. Stanford and UW both earned NCAA Tournament berths last season, ad-vancing as far as the regional finals.
Also receiving votes in the preseason poll were OREGON (85) and ARIZONA (29). The Wildcats were one of six Conference teams to play in the postseason tournament. The Ducks will be the first team in the country to get a crack at knocking down the defending champion Nittany Lions, travel-ing to the AVCA Showcase at University Park, Pa., on Aug. 26.
All 12 league teams are in action to open the 2011 campaign on Friday-Sunday, Aug. 26-28.
