Bank of the West Volleyball Weekly Honors
Weekly awards have been selected every week since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. The offensive, defensive and freshman of the week honors are new for the 2011 campaign.
UCLA junior Rachael Kidder (Moorpark, Calif.) was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Rainbow Wahine Vol-leyball Classic after posting 4.17 kills per set, 2.00 digs per set and 0.92 blocks per set in helping the 12th-ranked Bru-ins to three wins over ranked squads, including No. 10 and host Hawai'i. In the championship match against the Rain-bow Wahine, Kidder had a double-double with 17 kills and a career-high 12 digs, adding two aces and six blocks, which tied a personal best. Kidder led the Bruins in kills in their other two wins versus No. 23 Long Beach State and No. 22 Ohio State. Against the 49ers, she tallied 18 kills, six digs and four blocks. Against the Buckeyes, Kidder, added 15 kills and six digs.
Junior setter Karissa Cook led the Cardinal to wins over Notre Dame and No. 18 Duke in the Stanford Invitational. The Santa Cruz, Calif., native averaged 5.00 digs per set, 0.88 blocks per set and 12.25 assists per set in the victories. Cook tied a career high with 20 digs and set a new career best with five blocks against ND. She also controlled the of-fense with 47 assists and put down three kills of her own. She followed up with another career outing, registering a ca-reer-high 51 assists and, again, tied her career high with 20 digs. For her efforts, she was selected to the all-tournament team.
Krista Vansant (Redlands, Calif.) led UW to a 3-0 weekend at the Northwest Challenge, with sweeps over Portland State, Gonzaga, and Boise State. Her 39 kills led the team, and she improved each match, with a season-best 16 kills and a .577 attack percentage in the finale against the Broncos. Vansant hit .400 for the weekend and added 1.78 digs per set and a pair of aces. She is seventh in the Pac-12 with 3.63 kills per set and eighth with a .367 attack percentage for the year.
It is Kidder's first-career Pac-12 weekly recognition and UCLA's 56th all-time. Cook's selection is the first weekly nod of her career and Stanford's 75th all-time. Vansant was the first-ever Pac-12 Freshman of Week last week and earns the award for the second-straight week.
UCLA travels for a non-conference tilt at Pepperdine on Wednesday, Sept. 7, then opens Pac-12 play at USC on Fri-day, Sept. 9. That match will be televised on a tape-delayed basis on Fox Sports Net. Check local listings for airtimes. Stanford hosts the prestigious Nike Big Four Classic this weekend on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9 and 10. Four-time defending national champion Penn State, Florida and Texas will visit Maples Pavilion. Washington takes on Seattle and Fresno State at the Invitational at Seattle.
