Bank of the West Volleyball Weekly Honors
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.—STANFORD's Rachel Williams was named the Bank of the West Pac-12 Women's Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week; teammate Carly Wopat was selected the Defensive Player of the Week; and OREGON STATE's Arica Nassar was voted the Freshman of the Week, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. The weekly honors reflect performances for the week of Sept. 5-11.
Weekly awards have been selected every week since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. The offensive, defensive and freshman of the week honors are new for the 2011 campaign.
A sophomore outside hitter from Los Gatos, Calif., Rachel Williams led the Cardinal offense in wins over four-time de-fending national champion and No. 2 Penn State, and No. 7 Florida to capture the team's second-straight Nike Volley-ball Big Four Classic title over the weekend. Williams averaged 5.00 kills, 2.89 digs, 0.67 blocks and 5.39 points per set over the two matches. Against PSU, Williams registered her second career double-double with 22 kills and 12 digs on a .302 attack percentage. In a five-set thriller against the Gators, she led the team with 23 kills and 14 digs, also col-lecting a career-high four blocks. Williams was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, her second-consecutive week earning that honor.
Cardinal middle blocker, Carly Wopat (Santa Barbara, Calif.) anchored the Stanford defense at the Nike Volleyball Big Four Classic, earning all-tournament honors. Her efforts helped the team post its second-straight undefeated non-conference season (6-0), averaging 1.44 blocks and 1.56 digs to go with 2.67 kills and 3.56 points per set in the two matches. Versus PSU, the sophomore tallied a team-high seven blocks, adding eight digs and 11 kills. Against Florida in the tournament championship, she recorded six blocks, six digs and put down 13 kills in the five-set thriller.
Arica Nassar (Menifee, Calif.) had a great week, averaging .402 hitting percentage, 3.56 kills per game and 4.66 points per game in helping the Beavers win four matches last week, including an upset of No. 22 Long Beach State. Her hit-ting percentage for the week was the second-best on the team, hitting well over the team average in each match, and was the only OSU blocker averaging over a block per set (1.38 bps). She tallied three aces, two coming against SMU, while also notching a career-high 11 blocks in the same match. She set her personal best in kills twice, tallying 15 against Seattle to open the week, then notching 16 against host LBSU to close out the weekend. Leading all players in points scored with 74.5 (4.66 pps), Nassar was named all-tournament at the Long Beach State Baden Classic.
It is the first-career Pac-12 weekly recognition for both Williams and Wopat, and Stanford's 77th all-time. Nassar earns the Pac-12 Freshman of Week last week for the first time.
Oregon State and Stanford open Pac-12 play this week on the road. The second-ranked Cardinal face the No. 1 team in the country in CALIFORNIA on Tuesday, Sept. 13, then hosts newcomers Utah (Sept. 16) and Colorado (9.17) to close out the week.
