Bank Of The West Weekly Volleyball Honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.—USC's Kendall Bateman was named the Bank of the West Pac-12 Women's Volleyball Of-fensive Player of the Week; and UCLA claims two weekly nods with Kelly Reeves and Zoe Nightingale being voted Defensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. The weekly honors reflect performances for the week of Sept. 19-25.

Weekly awards have been selected every week since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. The offensive, defensive and freshman of the week honors are new for the 2011 campaign.

USC and UCLA receive the nods after both teams defeated the top two teams in the country in then-No. 1 California and then-No. 2 Stanford.

A senior setter, Kendall Bateman (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) posting two 40+ assists matches in the sweep of the Bay Area teams over the weekend, averaging 13.83 assists per set. She had 42 assists, seven digs and two blocks against the top-ranked Bears, while directing the offense to a .271 hitting percentage. Against the Cardinal, she collected 41 assists, nine digs and one block, helping the Women of Troy extend their win streak to four matches. With the victories, USC jumped up to No. 5 in this week's AVCA Coaches poll after being ranked No. 12 last week.

Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Reeves (San Diego, Calif.) had double-doubles in each of the Bruins' wins over the top two teams in the nation last weekend. Defensively, she had a career-high 19 digs against the Cardinal, while adding 14 digs versus the Golden Bears. Reeves was also a big factor on the offensive side of the ball, hitting .358 over the two matches, claiming 17 kills against Stanford and 14 against Cal. Against the Bears, she hit .444 with only two errors in 27 swings.

A middle blocker out of Sacramento Calif., Zoe Nightingale had a career-high seven blocks against the then-No. 1 Bears, also adding six kills with no errors on 11 swings for a 54.5 hitting percentage. On the previous evening against the Cardinal, she had two kills, three digs and two blocks.

It is the second-career Pac-12 weekly recognition for Bateman and USC's 47th all-time. Reeves earns the weekly nod for the first time in her career and it is the 57th citation for the Bruins. Nightingale earns the Pac-12 Freshman of Week for the first time.

While USC made the jump to No. 5 in the AVCA Coaches poll, the Bruins also make a jump, earning a No. 2 national ranking, up from No. 7 last week. The Trojans and Bruins put their new rankings to the test, traveling to Utah and Colo-rado this weekend.
