Bank Of The West Volleyball Weekly Honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.— STANFORD's Carly Wopat was named the Bank of the West Pac-12 Women's Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week; WASHINGTON's Bianca Rowland was selected the Defensive Player of the Week; and CALIFORNIA's Christina Higgins was voted the Freshman of the Week, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. The weekly honors reflect performances for the week of Sept. 26-Oct. 1.

Weekly awards have been selected every week since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. The offensive, defensive and freshman of the week honors are new for the 2011 campaign.

Sophomore Carly Wopat (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led Stanford to wins over Arizona State and Arizona last weekend. The middle blocker hit .502 in the two matches, registering 3.71 kills per set and 2.00 blocks per set. Against ASU, Wopat was nearly perfect in recording 12 kills on 21 attempts, registering just one error for a .524 hitting percentage. She also added five blocks against the Sun Devils. In the win over the Wildcats, Wopat tied career highs with 14 kills and nine blocks, while hitting .480 in the match.

Senior Bianca Rowland (Lynnwood, Wash.) had solid back-to-back efforts at the net, turning away a combined 15 shots as the Huskies swept the 15th-ranked Ducks and the Beavers on Friday and Saturday nights. The 15 blocks is her most over a two-match stretch this season. Her contributions at the net played a big part in UW holding Oregon to .189 on offense, and the Beavers to just .071, both well below their season averages. Rowland averaged 2.50 bps for the weekend to raise her season average to 1.45. Rowland also added 13 kills to average 3.67 points per set.

Christina Higgins (Inglewood, Calif.) had a career weekend against the Arizona schools. She set new career highs with 11 kills and 11.0 points against Arizona on Friday. Not to be outdone, Higgins shattered her newly-minted career highs the following day against ASU with 16 kills and 17.5 points, along with a new career high of 35 attempts. Overall, she averaged 3.86 kps and hit .345, putting up 4.07 pps. Her combined 27 kills were second on the squad as were her 28.5 points.

Wopat becomes the first-ever Pac-12 volleyball player to win offensive and defensive player of the week honors. She was the defensive pick on Sept. 12. It is her second-career Pac-12 weekly recognition and Stanford's 78th all-time. Rowland receives defensive player of the week nods for the second time this season, also the second of her career. It is the 31st citation for the Huskies. Higgins earns the Pac-12 Freshman of Week for the first time.

The Cardinal and Golden Bears head to Oregon and Oregon State this weekend, while Washington takes on Utah and Colorado to complete a four-match home stretch.
