This Week in Pac-12 Men's Soccer
PAC-12 MEN'S SOCCER NOTES
Washington, back in the NSCAA rankings at No. 23, and Oregon State play host to California and Stanford in a rematch of last week's Pac-12 action. UCLA climbed one spot to No. 8 in the poll and will face Cal State Northridge. San Diego State welcomes 2010 NCAA semifinalist Michigan.
Washington SR F Brent Richards earned his second Bank of the West Player of the Week honor of the season as the Huskies went 2-0 on their road trip over the weekend. He assisted on SR MF Casey McCool's first-half goal in the 2-0 win over Stanford on Friday. On Sunday, Richards scored both goals in UW's 2-1 double-overtime win over Cal. He leads the Huskies with nine goals and 20 points this season. Richards has already exceeded his season high of eight goals, accomplished in both 2008 and 2010.
UCLA JR F Chandler Hoffman scored both goals in the 2-0 win over San Diego State, earning National Team of the Week recognition from both College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer. Hoffman leads the Pac-12 in goals (11) and points (24). He has scored 17 goals in his last 20 games for the Bruins. UCLA has won eight straight matches against conference opponents dating back to last season.
SR MF Garrett Gunther scored two goals and recorded an assist as Stanford picked up its first Pac-12 win. The Cardinal built a three-goal lead and then hung on to defeat Oregon State 3-2. Gunther struck in the 10th and 20th minutes, while setting up SR MF/F Alexander Binnie's 11th-minute goal. Gunther has three goals and two assists this season.
Oregon State fought back from a one-goal deficit on two occasions to earn the 2-2 draw with Cal on Friday. SO MF Alex Eckerson scored his team-leading fourth goal while JR MF Roberto Farfan added his third. JR F Emery Welshman tied the school record by assisting on a goal for the fifth consecutive game.
Cal JR F John Fitzpatrick scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the loss to Washington. He also paces the Bears with 10 points. JR F Michael Munoz and SO MF Kyle Marsh provided goals against Oregon State.
SDSU RS SO F Jordan Ongaro had a team-high three shots in the loss to UCLA on Sunday. The Aztecs outshot UCLA, 10-9, but could not get on the board.
